Here's what to see and do in Sigiriya, one of the three cities in Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. Note that the entrance fee to the city of Sigiriya is 4200 LKR (about 25€), which gives you access to the temples and palaces, as well as the most iconic sites such as the Lion Rock. The Lion Rock is the main tourist attraction in Sigiriya. The Lion Rock has been a World Heritage Site since 1982. The fortification, which is located on top of the Lion Rock, was built in the late 5th and early 6th centuries. It was built by King Kashyapa who considered the rock a strategic place to control the city against possible attacks. If you want to enjoy a panoramic view of the area, we recommend climbing to the top of Lion Rock. There are archaeological remains which were once a fortress. At the top of the Lion Rock you can also see picturesque frescoes from the same period as the construction of the fortress. The walk to the top can be a bit costly: it is a path with several flights of stairs, totalling 1200 steps. The walk is well worth it as the views are breathtaking. We recommend that you bring water and, in sunny weather, sun cream. A good time to visit the Lion Rock is early in the morning when it is less crowded and less hot. If you are curious about the history and heritage of the place you are visiting, we recommend a visit to the Sigiriya Museum. Here you will find an exhibition of photographs, reproductions and murals of the town. The museum highlights the cultural interest of Sigiriya. It explains the city's relationship with other countries through its trade routes. This museum can be visited in about an hour. We recommend that you visit it before your climb to Lion Rock as this will give you more information about it before you leave. Practical information Price: The entrance fee is included in the city entrance fee. Location: Sigiriya Thalkotta Opening hours: 8am to 5pm For the more adventurous, we recommend climbing Mount Pidurangala. This is a mountain for more experienced climbers as there are some tricky climbing sections on the last part. Mount Pidurangala is located next to the Lion Rock. It is less famous but just as high. From the top you have a magnificent view of the mountains of Kandy, Pollonaruwa and Anuradhapura. This mountain also has a cave that you can visit. From the top of Mount Pidurangala, you can see the Sigiriya Rock in the distance and take a picture worthy of a travel catalogue. We recommend climbing Mount Pidurangala at sunrise to enjoy a beautiful sunrise.
